Glass Balustrades
Balustrades
Safeguard Balustrade Systems

The requirements for balustrades to act both as fall arrest and offer containment is well detailed both in BS 6180 and Document K of the Building Regulations.

The performance requirements for a barrier will be determined by its application domestic, commercial, office or retail. Crowd loadings will demand the highest of performances. The load is generally considered to be applied at 1100mm above finished floor height however check your application.

Safeguard balustrade systems offer fully structural free standing clamped or bolt fixed systems, full height balustrades or baluster and rail systems with bolted or clamped glass infill panels.

Safeguard Free Standing Balustrade Systems

Safeguard toughened and laminated structural balustrade systems offer integrity in failure with one panel broken the remaining will not only offer containment but offer transfer load support for a continuous handrail.

Base Clamped

By retaining Safeguard toughened and laminated structural glass in a steel base clamp the panel is placed in tension this in tur n reduces the actual deflection at the loaded edge. The clamp fixings are designed specifically for the individual load requirement. Fixings are specifically designed to reflect changes in the structural substrates.
Free Standing Balustrade

A Safeguard single toughened structural balustrade is available consideration should be given to the requirements for safety glass in overhead glazing applications. GGSW consider that glass 2.5m above head height should not exceed a single 10mm toughened glass all other material should be a combination of heat tempered and laminated glass.

Steel fixings are in mild steel with primed, painted, galvanised or polyester powder coated finishes or stainless steel.

Bolt Fixed

Safeguard bolted balustrade systems are an option where the required line load does not exceed 1.5kN. the princilple generally requires two bolts, countersunk washers gaskets and bosses at 300mm intervals. Each application requires an engineered solution sensitive to the structural substrate to be fixed into. A screen printed band can be applied to obscure slab edge details if required.

The Safeguard bolted balustrade system is available in a toughened and laminated or single toughened format. The fixings are engineered differently to resist compression applied to the interlayers at fixing points.

Important Questions to Answer

• How are you intending to replace it?
• What is the application?
• What loads are to be applied?
• What is the open distance behind the barrier?
• Inter nal or exter nal?
• How would the handrail be fixed?
• What is the structural substrate?
